For many people, a checkup and cleaning every six months works well. But the honest answer is that there is no single right interval — the schedule that protects your health depends on your gums, your cavity history, and a handful of risk factors that are different for every person. Some patients do better coming in every three or four months. Others, with healthy gums and a long stretch of uneventful visits, can comfortably stay on a six-month rhythm.
Here is how we think about it at Winnetka Dental Group, and how to figure out what your own interval should be.
Where “every six months” came from
The six-month checkup is a reasonable general guideline, not a law of nature. It exists because most dental problems — decay between teeth, early gum inflammation, a failing filling — develop slowly and quietly. Six months is short enough that most of these show up while they are still small and simple to address, and long enough to be practical for a busy life.
What the guideline was never meant to do is replace judgment. A schedule that fits a healthy 30-year-old with no fillings does not necessarily fit someone managing gum disease, dry mouth, or a mouth full of older dental work.
What actually determines your interval
When we recommend a recall schedule, these are the things that move it:
- Your gum health. This is the biggest one. If you have been treated for gum disease, a three- to four-month maintenance schedule is common, because the bacteria that drive it repopulate below the gumline within a few months of a professional cleaning.
- Your cavity history. Someone who has needed several fillings in recent years benefits from closer watching than someone who has not had a cavity in a decade.
- Dry mouth. Saliva protects teeth, and many common medications reduce it. Less saliva generally means higher risk.
- Health conditions. Diabetes, for example, and gum health influence each other in both directions.
- Smoking or vaping. Both raise gum-disease risk — and smoking can mask the early warning signs, like bleeding.
- What is already in your mouth. Crowns, bridges, implants, and aligners all deserve regular professional eyes on them.
- Your home care. Consistent brushing and flossing genuinely stretch the safe distance between visits.
How we set your schedule at Winnetka Dental Group
Our approach to dentistry is conservative, and that applies to scheduling too: the goal is the visit rhythm your mouth actually needs — no more, no less — and we will tell you plainly why we are recommending it.
At your exam, your dentist and hygienist look at the trend, not just the snapshot: how your gum measurements compare to last time, whether an early spot we have been watching has changed, how your teeth are wearing. Digital records and iTero scans make those comparisons concrete — we can show you the change on a screen rather than asking you to take our word for it. If your mouth stays stable, your interval can relax. If something shifts, we tighten it for a while and explain what we are watching.
If it has been a few years, start here
If it has been longer than you meant it to be, you will not get a lecture from us — genuinely. It is one of the things patients mention most in their reviews: nobody here makes you feel bad about where you are starting from. We would rather see you now than have embarrassment keep you away another year.
A thorough exam, a cleaning matched to what your gums need, and a clear list of anything worth addressing — in order of what matters most — is all a restart involves. Many people who have been away for years are pleasantly surprised by how short that list is.
What checkups cost here, plainly
Winnetka Dental Group is fee-for-service and out-of-network with all insurance plans. If you have dental benefits, we file claims on your behalf and any reimbursement goes to you; many PPO plans still reimburse a meaningful share of preventive visits. If you do not have insurance, our dental membership plans cover routine preventive care for a flat monthly amount and take a percentage off other treatment. Either way, you will know what a visit involves before it happens — clear answers are the whole point of how we practice.
Common questions from patients
Is every six months really necessary?
For many adults, yes, six months is a sensible rhythm — but it is a starting point, not a rule. Your dentist should be able to tell you why your interval is what it is. If your gums are healthy and your visits have been uneventful for years, six months is usually right; if you are managing gum disease or a high cavity risk, a shorter interval protects you better.
What if I have gum disease?
Then more frequent maintenance visits — often every three to four months — are usually recommended. After a deep cleaning, the bacteria below the gumline rebuild within roughly that window, so the interval is timed to interrupt them. Your exact schedule depends on how your gums respond, which we measure and share with you at each visit.
I haven’t seen a dentist in years. Will the first visit back be overwhelming?
No — it is a comprehensive exam, a cleaning suited to what your gums need, and an unhurried conversation about anything we find, starting with what matters most. Nothing gets decided without you understanding it first. See our new patient information for how a first visit works.
Do I get X-rays at every checkup?
No. X-rays are taken on an interval based on your risk, not automatically at every visit. Many adults with healthy mouths go a year or more between routine cavity-detection X-rays. We explain our approach in Do I Really Need Dental X-Rays?
Do kids follow the same schedule?
Children generally benefit from the same six-month rhythm, and sometimes shorter intervals while habits and diet are still taking shape. Their risk changes quickly as teeth erupt, so regular eyes on a growing mouth matter.
